Volunteer Job Descriptions

Committees are split into three categories: service, events, and other.

*Committees with volunteer opportunities outside the regular school/work day are indicated with an asterisk.

Times and/or dates are indicated when known or limited to a specific period.  Otherwise, volunteer opportunities are throughout the school year and/or as needed and you can participate once or as many times as you like.


Beautification* ~ Volunteers help maintain the Secret Garden and perform other gardening projects around the school.

Community Service* ~ Assist with community service/charitable giving projects (e.g. Treats for the Troops, Henrico Christmas Mother, and Pennies for Pollinators).

Cultural Arts ~ Work with chairperson to coordinate arts and enrichment activities (guest writers and performers).  Make copies, get supplies, help setup, etc.

Green Team* ~ Help Miss Fitzpatrick and students at meetings (every other Wed between 2:45 and 3:15) and/or with environmental projects.

Hospitality* ~ Provide food, snacks, supplies, etc. for teacher and staff recognition events.

Memory Book* ~ Take pictures, assist with communication, compile materials, and/or help with distribution of memory books at end of school year.

Programs* ~ Work with chairpersons to coordinate special programs (Veteran’s Day assembly, Internet Safety, etc.).  Make copies, get supplies, help setup, etc.

Recycling* ~ Assist students collecting recycling from the school and preparing it for pick-up.  Every other Thurs between 7:45 and 8:15.

Reflections* ~ Assist chairpersons with collecting, logging, categorizing and displaying entries (SEP) for theme-based national arts contest and/or help with Reflections ceremony at PTA general meeting (OCT).

Social & Spirit* ~ Assist chairpersons with planning and/or volunteer during social/spirit event(s), such as Bingo.


Book Fair* ~ Help with wish lists, birthday books, raffle, vouchers, and other needs for “kick-off” day (typically a Sat in NOV at Barnes & Noble).

Fall Festival* ~ Be part of the planning committee for our largest fundraising event.  Subcommittees (e.g. food, games/grab bags, communications, haunted house, face/hair paint/crafts, etc.) will meet periodically in AUG, SEP and OCT.

Fall Festival* ~ Setup, serve food, run games, etc. the day/night of Fall Festival (typically a Fri in OCT).

Field Day* ~ Be part of the planning committee and help coordinate t-shirt orders, lunch orders, volunteers, putt-putt registration, etc.  Meet periodically between FEB and MAY.

Field Day ~ Setup, cleanup, or run games, relays, tug-of-war, putt-putt, etc. the day of Field Day (usually the first Friday in May – Rain date of the following Monday).

Fifth Grade Celebration* ~ Be part of the planning committee for our end of the year celebration for 5th graders.  Meet periodically between JAN and JUNE.

Fifth Grade Celebration ~ Setup, cleanup, run games, serve lunch, etc. the day of Fifth Grade Celebration (last Thursday of the school year).

Kids’ Club* ~ Sign children in and out, assist instructors and ensure safety of students during enrichment program.  After school on Wed (between 2:40 and 4:10) for 6-weeks in JAN, FEB and MAR.  Help once or each week.

Picture Days ~ Assist photographer, students and teachers by keeping children lined up and on schedule for individual (OCT) and class (FEB) pictures.

Spirit Nights* ~ Work with chairpersons to plan and promote spirit nights.  Also, volunteer during events, especially first one held at school (SEP).


Dining Room ~ Assist students during lunch (11:30 to 12:30) by providing napkins, spoons, condiment packets, etc. when don’t have enough scheduled volunteers.

Media Center (Library) ~ Check out and shelve books as well as help the Media Specialist with projects.  Based on your availability (e.g., weekly, monthly, etc.).

Room Parent ~ Work with your student’s teacher to plan special activities, enlist parent support as needed, teacher coverage, lunch duty, communications and other things.  Please do not volunteer unless you are prepared to devote an hour + each week and have some basic computer skills.  2 per class.

Workroom ~ Provide regular weekly support to teachers by copying, laminating and preparing materials for classrooms and projects.  Work independently for any time (typically ½ to 1 hour) during the day(s) you sign up to volunteer.  NOTE: Children are not allowed in the workroom for safety reasons.

General ~ Be added to a list of volunteers.  Sign up when you see something that works for you or interests you.
