Reflections Results

For 50 years, National PTA’s Reflections program has helped students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life. Students can submit art work in six categories, Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts and are grouped by division with grades Kindergarten through Second in the Primary division and Grades third through fifth in the Intermediate division.

We had an amazing group of artists who embraced this year’s theme of “Heroes Around Me” and rose to the challenge to share their interpretation of the theme.  Our students’ imaginations took off to some incredible places. This year, we had 56 entries from 42 students and at least one entry in each category and division level.

The Reflections Program would not be possible without the support of many people both at our school and in our community. We would like to recognize and thank our judges who provided their knowledge and expertise and took time from their schedule to review and evaluate each submission based on specific criteria.

Dance Choreography: Ms. Kathy Josefiak

Film Production: Mr. Kevin Pruyn-Bouley

Music Composition: Ms. Kathy Josefiak

Photography: Mr. Charlie Connell & Mrs. Renee Connell

Visual Arts: Mr. Charlie Connell & Mrs. Renee Connell

This year, we were able to provide prizes to every participant, a special prize for one participant in each category, and treats for the awards ceremony thanks to the generosity of our community partners – Art is Fun, BJ’s Restaurant, Chick-fil-A, Richmond Symphony, Spirited Art, Visual Arts Center of Richmond, and Wegmans – who provided donations for our program.

Congratulations to all our participants and winners (listed below)! Students who received 1st place will have their entries submitted to the County level. The Henrico County Council PTA Reflections awards ceremony will be held February 19, 2019 at Glen Allen High School. Good luck!

Did you know the Reflections themes are actually submitted by students? In fact, two years ago the theme selected was from a student at Shady Grove Elementary. This year, we would like to encourage our students to submit their ideas for a theme by completing the online form by November 15. The Reflections Committee will then select 5 themes to submit to the Virginia PTA who will vote on the top 5 themes which will be submitted to the National PTA. The National PTA will then choose a theme sometime in February for the 2020-2021 Reflections program. The winning student receives $100 from National PTA!
